OVERHATE: New Beginnings are Met (1 Μay 2020, Wolf Entertainment)

Overhate were formed in Venezuela and in 2020 they released their newest and until today most recent album, entitled “New Beginnings Are Met”. While two years have passed from the album’s release, I only recently stumbled upon it and I was blown away.

Having never listened to the band before, I had no actual idea what to expect and what their sound is like. All I knew was that they label themselves as a thrash metal band, and that’s pretty much it. However, Overhate are much more than a typical thrash band, offering a sound much more complex, unique and fresh that is based on thrash metal foundations.

The album opens with the song “Realities Collide”, an explosion of groovy aggression with distinct thrash characteristics. Overhate do not waste any time and introduce the audience to their sound in the first minutes of the album. Setting both the pace and the mood with the opening track, Overhate state that the “New Beginnings Are Met” is an album that balances between groove and extreme/thrash metal, combining the best elements of these genres. In the album, there are, also, some pattern breaking ideas like the songs “Hidden Behind Words” and “The Penance and the Lesson” that show some death metal inspired ideas that add extra aggression and roughness to the song. The Overhate along with the rough, deep, growl vocals utilize some clean as well, creating a contrast and adding more sentiment, making the vocal lines even more powerful.

Overhate’s most recent release checks all the boxes. The “New Beginnings Are Met” offers 53 minutes of powerful, groove/thrash metal. Aggressive, heavy riffs derived from a hostile and unjust environment form an explosive, ferocious sound that reminds of bands like the Lamb of God but with a thrash twist. So, if you haven’t had the chance of listening to the album, I highly recommend that you give the Overhate a chance because they are a killer band with a great and solid sound.
