The “Cosmic Wave” EP is the latest release for Gia Federico’s solo instrumental project, Gia G, after her last work, “The Ladder” which was released in 2019.
Whilst the EP is mainly a guitar album, Gia G never slips off the subject to show off her skills but she rather stays focused to the music. Gia G doesn’t serve her ego through the relentless shredding but stays in service of the track. This is why the “Cosmic Wave” sounds so good.
Of course, the protagonist is always the guitar but it never tries to outshine the other instruments. There is a musical cohesion in the compositions and in the arrangements that assist every instrument to play its part.
The EP begins with the track “Cosmic Wave” giving us a taste of her skill. In this particular track Gia plays a lot around with the guitar’s tremolo bar, adding interesting phrases into the composition.
Second comes the song “Reminiscing”. Here, Gia adds a strumming acoustic guitar, drops the bpm and focuses into more blues oriented lines, coloring her phrases with her pitch harmonics.
Last is the track with the most complex guitar work. The “Intrical Fusion” is built around a very basic drum beat that keeps the rhythm while the guitar shreds in Vi-like style with a lot of sweep picking.
In just 11 minutes Gia G presents her musical arsenal and her diverse range of playing. The only drawback is that it last so little, so let’s hope that this was only an appetizer before her full-length work.
