After six years, the Swedish sleaze metal band Crashdïet's new album with their new vocalist Gabriel Keyes will be released on 13th September. Let's see what happened anno, what happened during this break and by the resart.
Let's go back to the time a bit. In 2015, many fans and we think, you were also surprised when Simon had left the band in a strange way. Do you know yet, what was the real reason of it? Since then, have you talked to him about it?
Martin: Well, looking back at it, we’ve realized that Simon wasn’t in his best shape during that period and there was quite some tension in the band that year. But we blindly went on with the show and went to Tokyo for two shows. As everyone know by now, Simon went home to Sweden after the first show so we had to get up on stage as a trio. Yes we hade a meeting after coming home from Japan, but it was clear that Simon had moved on. He didn’t want anything with CRASHDÏET to do, or even Simon Cruz. That’s when we parted ways.
Have you ever thought about changing your style? Or have you ever thought of continuing Crashdïet as a trio?
Martin: We’ve never thought about continuing as a trio. Being the frontman in this band is not an easy task. We did however toggle between the idea of either starting something new or continuing with CRASHDÏET. It’s never went that far though.
Martin, you formed a project called Sweet Creature in 2015. It was something to do with things had happened to Crashdïet? Was this project temporary or it will be continued?
It was most definitely a reaction to the state of CRASHDÏET at that time. I just needed to do something else with other people. I do want to make more albums with SC. But not at this time. Maybe next year.
Peter, you joined Bedårande Barn in 2015. How did you choose this band since their style is a bit different from Crashdïet's?
It all started years ago when I joined a tribute band to an old Swedish punk band - Noice - called Noice Forever. I became close friends with the singer - Marcus Öhrn - and when he started up Bedårande Barn it felt natural for me to join. The sound is pretty similiar between them both. Swedish punk, fits me like a glove, you know ;).
Eric, as it is known, you like extreme and thrash metal. Have you thought about joining such a band/project, yet?
I used to play in such bands, but I just can't seem to find the time anymore unfortunately. I had a death metal band from the age of 14 to 18, just before I joined Crashdïet!
In accordance with the Hungarian tradition, Santa Claus brought Gabriel as the new vocalist on 6th December, 2017 :). All joking aside, how did you find him?
Martin: We didn’t find him. Actually a guy called Sven, who later became our Manager, found him. He kind of made as me Eric and Peter talk again during the hiatus we had at the time. Gabriel was basically a known in Sleaze circuits in Stockholm. A young dude with a great voice. We hit it off immediately. The rest is history.
Gabriel, did you have other bands before Crashdïet?
I had a band called Perfect Crime together with my brother Kriss Keyes, the king of sleaze. It was long before Crashdïet. It lasted for 3 years and then we split the band because we didn't come along. It was a local Stockholm band and we played in the Swedish rock clubs around in Stockholm. We released an EP called Wanted with 3 songs, but its not available anymore. It was the last time me and my brother played in the same band together. We figured out that playing in the same band is not a healthy option for us because we always end up trying to kill each other at least 2 times a year. One time he hit me with his base in the face so I split my lip and one time I broke his ribs. We had some other bands together before Perfect Crime but it never lasted for a long time. Perfect Crime was founded by me and Jimmy Degreedos a wine loving guitarist from Stockholm. Later, we got joined by my brother Kriss Keyes and Jonathan "The Hammer" Qvick on drums, finally Filip "The Outlaw" Wieselgren on rythm guitar. One song is still on YouTube and it's called 'Telling Lies'.
Martin, now that Crashdïet is active again, what will be with Sister?
I will as long as they want me in the band. Obviously it will lead to some touring conflicts. But there are always ways to solve those. Hologram?
'We Are The Legion' was released on 31st December, 2017 that was followed by 'Reptile' a year later. Both songs were warmly welcomed by fans. Your next album can be expected this year. How does it feel like to release a new album after 6 years?
Martin: It feels unreal actually! We’re really pumped about this album and of course to play the songs live!
Did you write the new songs continuously during this long break? And did Gabriel also take part in the songwriting after he had joined the band?
Martin: Yes, but most songs on the album were written after ”We are the legion”, by me and Gabriel mostly. That song kind of set the tone for the direction of the ”RUST” album.
Actually, the band will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2020. Are you planning something special (for example a huge world tour) for this occasion?
Martin: Well, there are different ways to Celebrate. I think we see 2023 as our 20th anniversary. We will definitely release some re-issues and stuff like that.
We bet you have seen the film 'The Dirt'? What do you think about it?
Martin: Mixed feelings. I did’t suck as bad as I was afraid of!
What is your message to the sleaze world?
Martin: We’ve gotta hold on to what we’ve got! See you on the road!
Thank you for your time!
